This week our UC San Diego chapter won a successful campaign to pass a campus-wide referendum to keep CALPIRG here at UCSD.
In today’s long-overdue budget bill, Congress set aside $5 million for open textbook initiatives nationwide, which would replace high-cost publisher materials with free materials that can be accessed online or downloaded.
Today, Congress introduced its budget omnibus bill for the 2018 fiscal year, in which appropriators set aside $5 million for a program to lower textbook costs for students.
Here at CALPIRG Students, we’ve had a great start to 2018 fighting for social change on some of the biggest issues affecting students. We wanted to give you an update on our work this winter quarter.
Student government leaders of the undersigned colleges and universities write to Congress on the urgent need to address the skyrocketing price of textbooks, and a request to create a national open textbook pilot grants program in the FY18 appropriations bill.
Sacramento – Motivated by a concern for the state’s environmental future and rollbacks at the federal level, 100 students from CALPIRG, the California Student Public Interest Research Group chapters converged in Sacramento for their Annual Lobby Day.
CALPIRG Students, a student activism group with a chapter at UC San Diego, has organized a huge week of action this week in support of 100% clean energy in California. The week of action includes a massive petition drive to generate 5,000 petitions in support of clean energy legislation, a solar-powered concert featuring UCSD talent, and a Lobby Day in Sacramento with 100 students from across the state.
We should be able to trust that the products we buy are safe — especially ones our families use every day, applied directly to our lips. However, CALPIRG Studentsreleased a consumer guide titled “Kiss Off” which contains examples of lipsticks, lip balms, and children’s lip products which contain ingredients linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and reproductive problems. Popular brands such as Maybelline, L’Oréal, and ChapStick made the list.
We also attended a rally in Sacramento yesterday to speak out against offshore oil drilling at a meeting of the Ocean Energy Management Bureau.
