The Trump Administration has proposed opening nearly all our shores to offshore oil drilling.
This is bad!
The Administration’s plan would open vast new areas of the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico to drilling. Oil and gas drilling is an inherently dirty and dangerous business. There is simply no safe way to drill. By allowing offshore drilling in more of our coastal waters, the Trump administration increases the chances of a dangerous oil spill. Opening these areas to drilling endangers sea life including whales, dolphins, and sea turtles, as well as the life and livelihoods of Californians and all Americans in coastal communities.
By opening these areas to drilling, the Trump Administration will be acting counter to the best available science -- and the will of coastal residents. The past two years has seen an unprecedented outcry against drilling. Communities up and down the California coast—including Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara and Laguna Beach—have passed resolutions against offshore drilling and many California elected officials and agencies--including Governor Jerry Brown, the California Coastal Commission, California Fish and Game Commission and California State Lands Commission—have expressed opposition to expanded offshore drilling.
And public opposition to the proposed plan could still make a difference. So CALPIRG has been organizing efforts to push back.
We created on online petition to the Ocean Energy Management Bureau and have attended rallies in Santa Monica and Sacramento. We’ve collected 570 petitions in just a few days.
We also attended a rally in Sacramento yesterday to speak out against offshore oil drilling at a meeting of the Ocean Energy Management Bureau.
We’re standing up for our shores #ProtectThePacific #ProtectOurCoast
