As I’m sure you know, today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It’s day to honor an incredible civil rights activist who helped shape our country.
And it’s a federal holiday so that means there is no school, but that doesn’t mean we should just hang out at home. MLK Day is historically not observed as a day off, but a day on! A day to help your community and give back.
In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service.
This year our CALPIRG Chapters across the state organized volunteer activities to give back.
The UC San Diego chapter joined thousands of UCSD students for day of service at Baker Elementary School in Mountain View. Service projects include painting and gardening projects, organizing a free bookstore and setting up donated computers.
Our UCLA chapter organize students for a beach cleanup at Venice Beach, to clean up plastic to protect marine life and make sure our beaches are clean for everyone to enjoy.
Our UC Santa Cruz chapter organized two events. They also held a beach cleanup at the beautiful beach near campus and organized a gardening event at a garden made to generate food for the hungry and homeless in the Santa Cruz area.
We’re proud of the work these chapters did this MLK to help their communities.
