133 students came to our fall kickoff meeting at UC Berkeley to learn more about how to get involved in campaigns to engage young voters, get big money out of politics, get the city to be a leader on solar energy, and conserve water in the drought. Special thanks to Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner for supporting student activism and being our guest speaker.  Check out pictures on our facebook page.

Tell the Governor: Sign the Bills

By | CALPIRG Students

After years of organizing locally and across the state, California lawmakers passed two groundbreaking bills to protect our water, air and beautiful places: our bills to ban plastic grocery bags and get a million electric vehicles on California’s roads were both voted through the Legislature. Now they await the Governor’s signature before they can become law. This means Governor Brown has until the end of this month to approve (or veto) these bills. We need your help to ensure that he makes the right decision.

Tell Governor Brown to approve the statewide plastic bag ban and the Charge Ahead California clean vehicles bill.

UC Goes Solar! Congrats!

We are really excited that the University of California announced today a massive investment in solar energy!

As we witness the effects of global warming in our lives today- from the forest fire currently raging in Yosemite, to the worst drought in our history, it is clear we need to take action to fight climate change.

In California we still get about 80% of our energy from fossil fuels, even though we live in one of the sunniest places in the world.

Today's announcement will mean about 72,000 metric tons less global warming pollution will be poured into the air every year from our campuses. (Or equivalent to about 15 thousand fewer cars on the road each year). That is worth celebrating!

Lets use this momentum to make solar power affordable and accessible for all Californians.
